Piedmont Court Services - Internship / Volunteer Program
Piedmont Court Services has both intern and volunteer positions. Piedmont Court Services welcomes students from Hampden-Sydney College, Longwood University and Southside Virginia Community College to participate in their internship program. Interns are instructed on how to carry out various duties performed by Probation Officers. Piedmont Court Services selects 1-2 interns to participate in the program every semester. The unpaid internship program is a great opportunity to gain job experience. Participating in the same way as do interns, volunteers who are not required to complete a college internship, are welcome.
Interns at Piedmont Court Services are expected to perform the following duties:
- Report to work promptly adhering to the agreed-upon schedule of days and times.
- Compile data for Annual Reports and other reports as requested.
- Attend court with Probation Officers.
- Conduct intake on new cases.
- Maintain case files on offenders, including detailed documentation and follow-up.
- Be present in the PCS office to meet with offenders.
- Send/receive correspondence to local courts.
- Assist Probation Officers with random drug and alcohol testing.
- Assist Probation Officers with case file maintenance.
- Assist with special projects as assigned by the Director.
To qualify for an internship with Piedmont Court Services, an applicant must:
- Complete the Application for College Internship form and, when confirmed as an intern, the Statement of Acceptance Form.
- Interview for the internship experience.
- Wear professional attire.
- Establish a dependable work schedule.
- Maintain records and case files while ensuring confidentiality.
- Adhere to the rules and regulations of the PCS office; possess courtroom demeanor.
- Not be in possession of any narcotic, illegal substance.
- Not be in possession of or use any firearms or other weapons.
While working at PCS, an intern should be able to:
- Complete the intake process and organize case files.
- Perform the duties of case management, including the documentation of offender progress, referrals, court testimony, and the collection of payments.
- Prepare final reports to local courts
- Prepare monthly progress reports on offenders.
- Attend Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts.
- Complete special projects, i.e., Annual Report.
