Mission Statement
The Prince Edward Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to providing impartial law enforcement for its citizens and visitors with up-to-date criminal investigation techniques, highly trained staff to assist with societal needs and state of the art equipment. At Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, we are dedicated to community involvement and interact with the public through community policing. There are a number of employees of this department who also serve as firemen and/or rescue squad members. In addition to volunteering for emergency services, Deputies work on building bonds with the citizens of the county and provide support and services through character building programs such as D.A.R.E., Class Action, or Drug Awareness events for parent’s and youth. Other community programs include Project Lifesaver, Highway Safety Events, Senior Safety, Triad, CrimeSolvers, and the Neighborhood Watch Program.
Vision
The Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office has a vision of seeing a secured future for today’s children and their families provided for by a unified system of government along with citizen interaction.

L.A. “Tony” Epps

L.A. “Tony” Epps is a native of Prince Edward County. He and his three sons currently reside in the Rice Community of Prince Edward County.
Sheriff Epps received his education from Prince Edward County Public Schools. He is a graduate from the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. He also received additional training in homicide investigations from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Virginia State Police, and the Riverside California Sheriff’s Office as well as numerous other training courses.
He started his law enforcement career in 1987 as a jailor for Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office under the supervision of Sheriff Gene Southall. He was soon promoted to Road Deputy and from there to Chief Investigator.
Sheriff Epps has a sincere desire to serve the citizens of Prince Edward County and to be a Sheriff the citizens can depend on and believe in. His main goals are: to make our schools safer for our children and school staff; to implement a K-9 program to help with tracking individuals and narcotic detection; and working towards stiffer drug enforcement. Sheriff Epps and his deputies will also be working hard at targeting high litter areas throughout the county by enforcing the littering law.
