Vaccine Distribution Update

April 22, 2021

  • Virginia has entered Phase 2. Everyone, 16 and older, who lives in Virginia is eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. VaccineFinder.org is an online tool to help locate vaccine clinics. 
  • The 10,000th COVID shot has been administered in Prince Edward County. 
  • The Farmville Cares team has fielded 100+ calls in the last few weeks to schedule appointments and has a volunteer assisting those having challenges making an appointment at CVS or Walmart. Call 434-414-1188. 
  • Vaccination Data: 
    • Doses administered to date: 11,263 (up 842 from last week)
    • Total vaccinated to date with both doses: 4,769 (up 396 from last week)

April 15, 2021

  • The Piedmont Health District is now vaccinating everyone in Phase 1A-1C, prior to the state expanding to Phase 2 on April 18 (which includes everyone ages 16+).
  • The 10,000th COVID shot has been administered in Prince Edward County. 
  • 1504 people have been vaccinated at Centra Medical Center in Farmville. 
    Farmville Cares volunteers will assist members of the community with pre-registration on the VDH website or other needs during the pandemic. Call 434-414-1188. Community members and college-aged students can also volunteer to assist with vaccine clinics, food distribution, and other tasks at this link.
  • Update on Johnson & Johnson Vaccine - The federal government paused Johnson & Johnson vaccinations on April 13 while they investigated an extremely rare possible side effect. Individuals who were scheduled to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may reschedule their appointment. Read the full VDH statement here. 
  • VaccineFinder.org is an online tool to help locate vaccine clinics. There are currently 10 COVID vaccine clinic/pharmacy locations within 25 miles of Farmville at which appointments may be scheduled.

April 8, 2021

  • Centra is now vaccinating in Keysville and Burkeville for those whose primary care physician is located at Centra. To date, in Burkeville, Centra has vaccinated 222 total with Moderna dose #1 and 100 total with Moderna dose #2. In Keysville, there have been 189 total vaccinated with Moderna dose #1 and 100 total with Moderna dose #2.
  • On April 2 Prince Edward County completed a successful vaccination clinic at PEFYA. Thank you to all those who volunteered through Farmville Cares and the Southside Virginia Community College nursing students who supported these efforts. Over 600 vaccines were administered!  
  • The next mass vaccination event in the county will be at PEFYA on April 30. Those who would like to attend are encouraged to pre-register on the state site.
  • The Piedmont Health District is now vaccinating individuals in Phase 1C, which includes essential workers who play a key role in the functioning of society and/or interact regularly with the public and therefore have increased potential for exposure to COVID-19. We want everyone in 1A, 1B, and 1C to have the opportunity to schedule a vaccine appointment prior to the state expanding to Phase 2 (which includes everyone ages 16+) on April 18.
    •  Phase 1C includes workers from the following sectors:
      • Energy
      • Water, Wastewater, and Waste removal (includes recycling removal)
      • Housing and Construction
      • Food Service (restaurant workers)
      • Transportation and Logistics
      • Institutions of Higher Education Faculty/Staff
      • Finance
      • Information Technology & Communication

      • Public Safety (including engineers)

    • Anyone who is eligible in Phase 1C who has not pre-registered for the vaccine should go to vaccinate.virginia.gov or call 1-877-VAX-IN-VA to pre-register as soon as possible.
  • Through Farmville Cares, local college students have been trained in data entry to support clinics throughout the health district.
  • VaccineFinder is an online tool to help locate vaccine clinics. There are currently 10 COVID vaccine clinic/pharmacy locations within 25 miles of Farmville at which appointments may be scheduled. To search, visit vaccinefinder.org.
    • The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announces a new service for Deaf and hard of hearing Virginians who use American Sign Language (ASL). VDH partnered with Connect Direct, a subsidiary of not-for-profit Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD), to provide support in ASL for the Vaccinate Virginia Call Center during standard operational hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. ASL users have two ways to connect to this service, by videophone at 1-877-VAX-IN-VA (1-877-829-4682) or by clicking the “ASL Now” button at vaccinate.virginia.gov.

April 1, 2021

  • All vaccine clinics require appointments. Once pre-registered, you will receive a call with an appointment date, time and location.
  • The Central Virginia VA Health Care System is expanding eligibility for its enrolled Veterans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. After pre-registering through vaccinate.virginia.gov, they must fill out this form to begin the process.

  • The Chamber and Farmville Cares will host their next Virtual Vaccine Town Hall on April 20 at 6 p.m. The topic will be a business roundtable: “Vaccinations’ Importance to Reopening”. Panelists will be area business leaders. 
  • On April 6 from 6-8:00 p.m. Longwood University Lectures Committee will present Voices from the pandemic: The impact and overlap of stories of racial injustice, poverty, health, and politics, an interdisciplinary panel talk. Due to COVID restrictions, only Longwood students/faculty/staff can attend in person but community members are invited to join via Zoom. Email mengh@longwood.edu for the link.

March 25, 2021

  • The Piedmont Health District recently held a successful clinic at Hampden-Sydney College, vaccinating 212 individuals.

  • Town Hall Information: These live sessions provide local information on COVID-19 and vaccination efforts.
  • 1,100 have been fully vaccinated at Centra Southside Hospital and over 1,000 have been fully vaccinated at Centra Medical Center.
  • Centra will continue vaccinating 250/week at the medical center. Centra is now vaccinating 120/week in Keysville and Burkeville combined.
  • Centra will continue to administer the second vaccine at the hospital and is moving resources from the hospital to the medical centers.
  • Centra is also storing 195 doses of Pfizer for the Health Department.
  • Any/every vaccine is better than no vaccine! Please pre-register.

March 10, 2021

  • Vaccines continue to be in limited supply in the Piedmont Health District. Local vaccinations are available to: Phases 1A and 1B. In Prince Edward County, Phase 1A is almost complete. The current focus is now Phase 1B including frontline essential workers, school teachers and those who qualify because of age and medical condition.
  • Pre-registration is the first step in getting the vaccine. Visit vaccinate.virginia.gov or call 877-VAX-IN-VA (877-829-4682) to pre-register. All vaccine clinics require appointments. All Prince Edward County residents should please pre-register. Once pre-registered, you will receive a call with an appointment date, time and location.
  • The health department has completed vaccination of those pre-registered as 1a.
    • The Piedmont Health District is planning to schedule weekly vaccination clinics throughout the health district and held a successful March 5 clinic in Prince Edward County! 519 vaccines were administered to residents based on the VDH pre-registration waitlist. Shout out to all of the Farmville Cares volunteers and SVCC student nurses!
    • Working school teachers are currently being vaccinated throughout the region.
    • There is a focus on those who are 1b due to age and/or health conditions.
  • Centra Southside Medical Center continues to vaccinate its patients that are 65 years and older.
  • CVS in Farmville is vaccinating about 140 per day. Sign up on the CVS website [https://www.cvs.com/immunizations/covid-19-vaccine]. You must also be on the VDH pre-registration list. The following link is a complete list of redistribution centers: https://vaccinefinder.org
  • Walmart is conducting regional clinics this week for residents of PHD from the VDH pre-registration waitlist. Approximately 1200 vaccines will be administered.
  • HSC community vaccine clinics are in the works in conjunction with the fire department.
  • Longwood is working through administration of second doses for surrounding area K-12 teachers.
  • The Piedmont Health District has received its first shipment of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which will be used in mass vaccination efforts going forward. All three CDC approved vaccines – Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson – are being administered in Prince Edward County.
  • Vaccine supply is expected to increase in the coming weeks but it is still limited right now.
  • Any/every vaccine is better than no vaccine! Please pre-register.

February 24, 2021

  • Prince Edward County is excited to welcome Dr. Sulola Adekoya as the new Interim Director for Piedmont Health District and looks forward to coordinating with her and her staff.
  • Vaccines continue to be in limited supply in the Piedmont Health District. Local vaccinations are available to: Phases 1a and 1b.
  • The health department has completed vaccination of those pre-registered as 1a.
    • Second vaccinations being administered.
    • The majority of first responders who requested the vaccination in the region have received their first vaccine.
    • Working school teachers are currently being vaccinated throughout the region. 
    • The health district is now able to begin focusing on those who are 1b due to age and/or health conditions.
  • Details for a mass vaccination event are forthcoming in the next weeks. The event will be appointment based, for those who are pre-registered and for those in Phase 1B. 
  • CVS Pharmacy is now administering the COVID-19 vaccine by appointment only in select stores in Virginia for people age 65+ AND on a local health department wait list.   • Last week, Piedmont Senior Resources was not able to transport clients to vaccination sites due to limited vaccine availability in the region. Efforts will resume as soon as possible.

February 17, 2021

  • Vaccines are currently in short supply.
  • Local vaccinations are available to: Phases 1a and 1b.
  • CVS Pharmacy is now administering the COVID-19 vaccine by appointment only in select stores in Virginia for people age 65+ AND on a local health department wait list. CVS’s Farmville location is currently NOT offering vaccines.   • All emergency first responders throughout Prince Edward County (Volunteer Fire, EMS, law enforcement, etc.) have been given an opportunity to receive their first vaccine. 
  • Last week, Piedmont Senior Resources transported approximately 80 at-risk seniors from the Piedmont Health District to vaccination sites for their first COVID vaccine. Members of the Centra Southside Community Hospital’s PACE program have also been given an opportunity to receive their first vaccine. The effort is currently delayed to winter weather in the region.
  • STEPS has been asked by the Governor's office to serve as a facilitator to ensure all early childhood education providers are getting access to vaccinations.  They are working closely with Tom Angelo and the staff at Centra Southside Community Hospital to coordinate this work.  If you know of a center or at-home provider that has not been able to gain access, please email Sharon Harrup.   • Prince Edward County is supporting Health Department staff by providing two EMTs to help expand vaccine appointment capacity and expedite the vaccination process.

January 28, 2021

  • Prince Edward Vaccination Data: 
    • Doses administered to date: 1,452
    • Total vaccinated to date with both doses: 205

  • Who’s being prioritized:
    • people over 65 (especially those over 75)
    • people aged 16-64 with a high-risk medical condition
    • Essential workers including police, fire and hazmat, corrections and homeless shelter workers, childcare/pre-K-12 teachers and staff, food and agriculture including veterinarians, manufacturing, grocery store workers, public transit workers, mail carriers and essential government officials
  • To accommodate for each person vaccinated to receive both doses, the Piedmont Health District must carefully allot new distributions of vaccine supply to address those who need initial doses as well as those who require their second shot. 

Eligibility/How to Get Vaccinated

  • Vaccines appointments currently available to Phase 1a and 1b, only.

  • Note Regarding Access:
    • Proof of Virginia residency is not required to receive a COVID vaccine from VDH. COVID vaccines are intended to be used for the residents in the districts where the vaccines are provided, but there is no residency requirement. No one who qualifies otherwise is refused a vaccine based on where they live.
    • Photo identification also is not required for vaccination. It is important, however, to have some way to confirm your identity (i.e. name, date of birth) so VDH can confirm they are vaccinating the right person.  Government-issued identification is not required to receive a vaccination. About The Vaccine

  • There are many misconceptions about the vaccine itself. For example, some residents feel that the vaccine was “rushed”’ to the market and is therefore unsafe. Although the timeline of getting the COVID vaccine to the market was indeed very fast, both Pfizer and Moderna have been working in this space for many years. It is because of their strong foundation in this technology that they were able to generate a vaccine in less than a year.
  • The COVID-19 vaccines, like all drugs that are approved for human use, have been reviewed by various independent evaluators to ensure efficacy and safety during the clinical trials, and then by the FDA for approval.
  • After FDA approval, safety and efficacy continue to be monitored for adverse events.
  • Since the vaccine was approved, there have been a few reports of a rare, but serious, allergic response in a small number of patients. Be sure to consult with your physician before receiving the vaccine if this is an area of concern.
    • Safety boards nationwide continue to monitor reports of adverse reactions to the COVID vaccine, but to date these reports have been uncommon.
